Known for its stunning landscapes and unique rock formations, Zion National Park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. If you’re planning a visit, here are six fun activities to add to your itinerary:
- Hike: There is no shortage of trails in Zion that can provide you with lasting memories and you can take your pick from varying levels of difficulty. Popular hikes include Angels Landing, Watchman Trail, Lower Emerald Pool Trail, Canyon Overlook Trail, Observation Point, and more!
- Bike: Explore more of Zion National Park on two wheels! Bikes are permitted on all park roadways and on the Pa’rus Trail. But keep in mind, all other park trails, off-trail routes, and the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel are closed to bikes. There are bike racks located at major shuttle stops and at various trail heads throughout the park for convenience.
- Take a Scenic Drive: You don’t have to love hiking to explore this beautiful park. Take a leisurely drive through the park and stop at the various overlooks and viewpoints along the way. Drive through Mount Carmel Tunnel and visit Kolob Canyons, which is located in the northwest corner and offers different scenery than the main Zion canyon. Something to keep in mind – from March through late November, access to the main road in the main canyon, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, is restricted to shuttle busses only. Private vehicles are only allowed to access the road when shuttles are not operating.
- Stargaze: Zion National Park is a designated Dark Sky Park, making it an ideal spot for stargazing. On a clear night, the sky comes alive with thousands of stars. Check out these Ranger tips for stargazing in Zion.
- Sunset Picnic: Trust us when we say, there is something miraculous about seeing those red cliffs highlighted by the warm hues of the setting desert sun. Grab a picnic blanket, some snacks and your favorite beverage and cozy up in one of these easily accessible viewing areas to enjoy what will undoubtably be a picturesque evening.
- Scavenger Hunt: If your Zion National Park visit includes friends or family, create a scavenger hunt for the group to help guide your exploration! Include iconic landmarks or locations like the Mount Carmel Tunnel, animals like the Mexican Spotted Owl, and plants like the pkicklypear cactus. Learning about the park is fun for all age groups.
These are just a few of the many ways to experience the beauty and wonder of Zion National Park. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply enjoy stunning scenery, this park has something for everyone.
